Chapel Midden Laboratory Experience!
Historic Spanish Point
would like to invite you to experience the scientific process of
archaeological analysis. On Friday afternoons in February from
1:00pm-4:00pm Historic Spanish Point staff and volunteers will
partner with members of Timesifters to process displaced midden material
from the Chapel Midden. The Chapel Midden is an eastern extension of the
Shell Ridge dating from approximately 300B.C.E.-300C.E or early – middle
Manasota period. It is part of the larger Palmer Site (8SO2) that also
includes a burial mound and an Archaic Shell Ring. New discoveries will
be made as we sift, sort, identify, and catalog the remnants of this
fascinating culture. Shell tools, pottery, faunal material, bone pins,
ochre, and charcoal samples are just some of the exciting artifacts that
will be processed for future research. All of the processed material
will be housed as part of the collection here at Historic Spanish Point
providing a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the pre-Columbian
inhabitants. Join us during this unique hands-on experience that will
provide a lasting contribution to the archaeological record within this
region. Reservations are required. Please contact Kara Pallin, Program
Director at kara@historicspanishpoint.org or
941-966-5214 Ext. 260 for more information and to make your reservation.
