Historic Spanish Point is proud to host Norma Albertha Winter as our artist in residence. In addition to her vast knowledge of artistic techniques, she has many years of teaching experience with artists of all ages, skills, and abilities.

We welcome you to join Norma for one of her many upcoming art classes.

Norma Winter studied Visual Arts at American Art School in New York City, and various schools and colleges throughout the United States; including Willoughby Fine Arts, Lakeland Community College, Johnston State College and University of Phoenix. She works in many mediums, including clay, plaster, metal, watercolor, pastels, oils, woodcarving, airbrush, pencil, pen and ink, dyes, lettering, drawing and calligraphy, and has been teaching many of these forms in schools, colleges and in her studio for the past thirty years

Current Course Offerings

Drawing courses are available the first week of each month. Select from Basic Drawing or Still Life Drawing. See the course materials section at the bottom of this tab prior to registering*

 

Option 1: BASIC DRAWING (Intro to Drawing)

Course Description: Learn to draw basic shapes. Recognize basic shapes in objects. Learn to retain and make visible what we are seeing. Recognize light and dark, and cast shadows.

Course Time/Dates: All Basic Drawing classes take place from 10am-12pm and are taken over three days/sessions:

  • September 3rd, 5th and 6th
  • October 1st, 3rd and 4th
  • November 5th, 7th and 8th

Option 2: STILL LIFE DRAWING

Course Description: Learn to draw using a viewfinder to create a good composition. Learn to recognize balance and relationships between objects.

Course Time/Dates: All Still Life Drawing classes take place between 2pm-4pm and are taken over three days:

  • September 3rd/5th/6th
  • October 1st/3rd/4th
  • November 5th/7th/8th

*REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS:

(Students must provide their own course materials. Materials can be purchased from local art supply stores or big box stores. Specific brands are not necessary.)

  • 2 HB Pencil
  • Ebony Pencil
  • Kneaded Eraser

Acrylic as Watercolor

Course Description: Learn to draw and paint botanicals from the Butterfly garden or along the lush natural pathways of Historic Spanish Point.

Course Time/Dates: All Painting classes are offered twice a day; Morning (10am-12pm) and Afternoon (2pm-4pm) and are taken over three days/sessions:

  • September 10th, 12th and 13th
  • October 8th, 10th and 11th
  • November 12th, 14th and 15th

*REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS:

(Students must provide their own course materials. Materials can be purchased from local art supply stores or big box stores. Specific brands are not necessary.)

  • Sketch Pad
  • 12×14 inch stretched canvas
  • 2 — Acrylic brushes #8 or #10 (one flat, one round)
  • 2B pencil
  • Kneaded Eraser
  • Pink Eraser
  • Basic colors in acrylic paint tubes

Calligraphy: Introduction to Chancery

Course Description: Learn to write the written word in Chancery–a historical form of calligraphy. Learn the strokes that form the letters, and combine letters to make words and sentences. We will practice to gain elegance and proper form.

Course Time/Dates: All Painting classes are offered twice a day; Morning (10am-12: 00 pm) and Afternoon (2pm-4pm) take place from 10am-12pm and are taken over three days:

  • September 17th, 19th and 20th
  • October 14th, 16th and 17th
  • November 19th, 21st and 22nd

*REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS:

(Students must provide their own course materials. Materials can be purchased from local art supply stores or big box stores. Specific brands are not necessary.)

  • Marvy 3.5 Calligraphic market (chisel point)
  • Medium nib calligraphy pen (contact instructor if further information is needed)
  • T-square ruler (12, 14 or 18 inches)
  • Two 2B pencils
  • Practice Pad

Sketch and Draw from Nature

Course Description: Learn to locate, recognize and retain basic shapes in the formation of objects in nature around us. Learn the uses of a picture plane and viewfinder in creating a pleasing composition. Learn to gauge proportions and apply light and dark values to create a 3D effect. Practice hatching and crosshatching in developing values/tones.

Course Time/Dates: Sketch and Draw from Nature classes are offered in the morning (10am-12pm) and are taken over three days:

  • September 24th, 26th, and 27th
  • October 22nd, 24th, and 25th
  • November 26th, 28th and 29th

Figure Drawing (Human Form)

Course Description: Learn to draw the human form and its proportions. Sketch and draw gestures using a mannequin.

Course Time/Dates: Figure Drawing (Human Form) classes are offered in the afternoon (2pm-4pm) and are taken over three days:

  • September 24th, 26th, and 27th
  • October 22nd, 24th  and 25th
  • November 26th, 28th, and 29th

Alsketchii: Motivational and Inspirational

Course Description: Learn to draw a smooth continuous line, forming shapes revealed by the subconscious YOU on paper. As you guide your pen along in space you will create free-formed shapes that will fill in with beautiful designs retained subconsciously in your mental storehouse. Surprise yourself!

Course Time/Dates: Alsketchii classes are one session courses, and are offered in the afternoons from 2pm-4pm on the following dates:

  • August 27th
  • August 28th
  • August 29th
  • October 29th
  • October 30th
  • October 31st

*REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS:

(Students must provide their own course materials. Materials can be purchased from local art supply stores or big box stores. Specific brands are not necessary.)

  • Fine point Sharpie marker
  • Smooth surface pen and ink pad, 9×12 inches
  • Watercolors (optional)

 

COURSE POLICIES

  • All art classes must be paid in full at the time of enrollment.
  • All three session classes are $60 per person for Historic Spanish Point Members, $85 for future Members. One session courses are $20 for Members, $25 for future Members.
  • Classes are small and intimate, thus allowing for more personalized attention from the instructor. Courses fill up quickly, so please register well in advance.
  • Course materials are required and are the responsibility of the student. Course materials can be purchased at art/craft supply stores and most big-box retailers. Course materials are not included in the cost of the class.
  • Students are expected to attend all parts of the class. If you are unable to attend any part of the course, please contact the instructor as soon as possible.
  • The majority of classes take place in the Art Studio on the 2nd Floor of the historic White Cottage. If you have difficulty navigating stairs, please contact the instructor: (941) 966-5214.
  • Classes are non-refundable.
