The Untold Story of Cuban Fishermen at Spanish Point

Friday, May 15, 2020 | 6:00pm-7:30pm | Guptill House

Why is it called Spanish Point? This illustrated presentation will dive the often overlooked era of large-scale fishing by Spanish fishermen based on the island of Cuba. From the mid-1700s to the time of the homesteaders, Cuban fishing ranchos were located along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of Florida. This presentation will explore what we know – and what we don’t know about this vital economic driver that predates most of the commonly reported local history.

(Please note: This event will take place outdoors at Guptill House. Trams will be available to transport guests from the Gazebo area when they arrive.)
