The Untold Story of Cuban Fishermen at Spanish Point

Why is it called Spanish Point? This illustrated presentation will dive the often overlooked era of large-scale fishing by Spanish fishermen based on the island of Cuba. From the mid-1700s to the time of the homesteaders, Cuban fishing ranchos were located along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of Florida. This presentation will explore what we know – and what we don’t know about this vital economic driver that predates most of the commonly reported local history.

Recent research has revealed an African American heritage in Osprey, dating from the pioneer days to modern times. This illustrated presentation will explore what we know and what we don’t know about the African American legacy in Osprey.
